Rodent control on Maui & Hawaiʻi Island
Hawaii’s climate suits rodents year-round. Roof rats climb — they nest in dense foliage, palms and fruit trees and come in at the roof line, vents and eaves rather than at ground level. Norway rats work lower, through crawl spaces and foundations. House mice need almost no gap at all. Different species, different route in, different treatment.
Rodents are also a health issue here in a way they are not everywhere. Rat lungworm disease is endemic across all the Hawaiian islands, and 102 cases have been reported statewide since 2014 — 78 of them in Hawaiʻi County and 13 in Maui County. The parasite passes in rat droppings and is picked up by slugs and snails, which is how people are infected. Reducing the rat population around your home and garden is part of reducing that risk.
